This is the 8th INFO MANEJO. We offer you the second part of the advices for maintaining the coupling system, the explanation of why there is an additional distance when using air brakes and why it's important to audit repair shops.

Manejo
    Braking with air brakes
Most of the heavy vehicles driven through our streets and routes have air brakes. We should bear in mind that this kind of braking system functions with an additional delay.

This delay is produced because the last braking system circuit and its actuators are empty when the pedal brake is operated; consequently, an extra period of time sums up to stop the vehicle.

It's important to bear in mind that each extra second used to stop the vehicle turns into a longer distance covered.

When driving a truck, tractor or bus we should consider an additional period of 1 second to brake. If it carries a trailer, this can add ½ second more.

That is why, since the pedal is operated, there is a distance of additional metresdistance covered inevitably till the vehicle starts to stop. Therefore, when driving this kind of vehicles the safety following distance should be 4 seconds minimum.

Warning: Driving distances calculations vary with the driver and depend on their previous knowledge and experience. For this reason, the following distance, braking, etc. indicator tables is based on calculations that should be considered as a reference.

More advices to maintain and to use correctly the coupling system:

+ Don't use common greases as lubricants. They don't work for open mechanisms, because they stick to dust, sand, etc., which turn them quickly into an abrasive paste.

+ Every time maintenance work is done, with the trailer with the brakes on and the first gear change set, check that both vehicles are tightly coupled.

+ The locking handle and its mechanism have the function to open and shut the skidplate, but not to keep it locked. This mechanism is weak and its eventual damage or worn out can accidentally open the skidplate while driving.

+ The locking handle should not move when it's locked. If this happens, it indicates that the locking mechanism is excessively worn out.

+ The locking handle security is designed to prevent strangers from opening the skidplate, it's called "anti - vandalism security", but it doesn't work to keep the skidplate shut when its parts are worn out.

IMPORTANT: The coupling mechanism is the only connection between the tractor and the trailer, plus its load. Defects cause a sudden uncoupling, which leaves the trailer and its load free and driven by inertia, being impossible to handle them.

Manejo
   Repair shop audits
In order to mitigate the implicit risk in transport, periodic revisions should be done to each vehicle. In turn, these revisions should lead us, earlier than later, to check how the preventive maintenance is done. That is why for all vehicle risk mitigation process it's necessary to include the audits to the repair shops and maintenance, verification and reparation places.

In downtown it's common to find specialized repair shops, well equipped and with suitable personnel for the different vehicle safety subsystems: brakes, tires, coupling systems, etc. But, it's more difficult to find places with similar characteristics in rural or far away spots. It's here where the audits should be accompanied by:

+ Training the involved personnel

+ Setting up standard procedures for the periodical maintenance

+ Tools and equipment verification

+ Knowing and complying with rules and with the manufacturer specifications, plus their last updates

Another important point is to check the spare parts used, most of all, when the maintenance or reparations are done in outsource repair shops. Their legitimacy assures, apart from sticking to the law, that the parts are manufactured with the suitable materials and the processes established by the manufacturer. This implies a maintenance cost drop because the spare part is more durable.
