We are glad to send you the 7th INFO MANEJO's issue. Here you will find advice on how to drive at night safely, how to maintain in good state the fifth wheel coupling system and why it's better to work with trip plans.

    Precautions when driving at night
Driving a vehicle at night implies additional risks due to fact that the surroundings contrasts diminish, producing changes in the visual perception.

At dark, sharpness and visual field, pupils dilate and we perceive objects wrongly. Shapes, movements and colours are also perceived erroneously.

Because of these reasons, it's advisable not to drive at night. If we need to, it's crucial to make sure that:

+ The windscreen and windows are clean.

+ The lights function correctly, are clean and regulated.

+ Only use clear glasses.

+ When feeling sleepy, stop the vehicle and rest.

+ In order not to be dazzled, avoid looking directly the lights coming from the other way. We should slightly avert our eyes to the right and use as a reference the verge line.

+ Besides of the route's allowed maximum speed, we should drive at the one that permits us to stop the vehicle within the visual field, keeping in mind our head light's reaching point -illuminated zone-.

+ When driving with high beam headlights, if a bend is ahead, change into low beam headlights so you don't glare the people in cars coming in front of you.

Fifth Wheel and King Pin    (1st part)
In order to obtain a good performance from the coupling system it's advisable to:

+ Have the safety mechanism most important parts inspected, at least once a week or at each 5000 km. For this, uncouple the trailer lifting it till there is 1 cm space between the coupling plate and the trailer's metal sheet.

+ Clean periodically the fifth wheel so you can eliminate any sand, dirt or any substance's rest. These can quickly wear out the surface and the mechanism. It's better to clean it by washing it with water pressure and vapour. The cleaning frequency should be the one suitable for each kind of vehicle and each road characteristics, which give the specific truck dirtiness.

+When all the parts are clean, visually check the hazardous and delicate parts: the bolt adjustment, the weldered part where the bolt fits in, the locking skidplate mechanism

+ Lubricate the skidplate's support surface, its locking mechanism and the king pin. Do it only with EP (Extreme Pressure) or MoS2 (Molybdenum Disulphide) grease.

+ The pin's original size is: top diameter 73 mm and low diameter 50.8 mm. The lowest bearable size is: top diameter 71 mm and low diameter 49 mm. Under these numbers, the part should be replaced, under no circumstances is tolerable its repair*.

* It's not allowed to repair coupling system parts, as it happens with all vehicle safety mechanisms.

   Trip planning, a combining tool
Before a vehicle fleet unit starts a trip, the tool known as trip plan is completed. There are analyzed, by means of previously consent criteria, all the risks levels and the fulfilment of the factors related to:

+ the driver: enough sleep hours, valid medical certificate, etc.

+ the vehicle: technical revision, road type and load proper vehicle, etc.

+ the environment: critic or hazardous routes, appropriate weather conditions, etc.

Every company with a vehicle fleet must use this useful tool that not only offers a previous risk analysis, but aids to decide if it's suitable starting the trip or not. The trip plan is based on procedures that require fulfilling with the specific route, stopping at different road spots, a departure and arrival schedule. In this way, apart from controlling risks before the trip starts, they are also checked during its course.

However, the main challenge when working with a trip plan is to try not to think it as another formal fulfilling procedure. In order to avoid this from happening, it's necessary that the trip management includes the principal system elements risks consideration and control. In this way, the trip plan combines all the previously performed vehicle management activities results: the constant audits done to the company's vehicles, the drivers training and registration, the road analysis and the vehicle risk management, all these form a complete trip management.
