Car drivers and bikers, an intelligent coexistence
|
Cyclists are also part of the transport system; they transit urban streets and far away routes. By means of Intelligent Driving we can build a safe system, as these tips below:
Advice for car drivers:
+ Surpass cyclists at moderate speed and within at least 50 cm distance from them. In this way we will attenuate the aerodynamic impact over them caused by the air volume produced over the vehicle's front-end and lateral part.
+ When we surpass we should let cyclists enough space to maneuver. If we are behind them, they can not see us or listen correctly to our vehicle as to notice or calculate precisely our nearness.
+ Before turning, check if cyclists have noticed our intention and do not cut on to them.
+ Check attentively at the rear-view mirror and at the blind spots before opening the car doors.
+ Do not sound the horn, you will startle them.
+ Do not get too dangerously close and keep a safe following distance, also at traffic lights.
Advice for cyclists:
+ Rule number one: being seen is as important as to see.
+ Always use crash helmet and remember that in accidents and falls the cyclist is the most exposed person.
+ Respect the traffic rules; they are also valid for cyclists.
+ Keep eye contact with the car drivers that come at intersections, try to anticipate if they will turn.
+ Be very attentive when you drive through streets with parked cars. Be aware that at any time doors might be opened from inside.
+ Stop at every red light at the correct place.
+ Do not drive in a zigzag and do not abruptly turn your direction.
+ Drive only through authorized places, do not stop over the pedestrian line nor use it to cross streets or avenues. If there is a cycle lane, use it.
+ Bear in mind the local regulations about using reflecting vests, crash helmets, etc. It is also recommended to use rear-view mirror for bicycles which can be installed either in helmets or handles.

Progress in steering systems
|
Until the twenties vehicles had mechanical steering and where easy to drive. When heavy vehicles appeared, Francis Davis invented the first assisted steering, making driving easier.
Assisted steering gives an extra energy source when we turn the steering wheel. This is an advantage because what turns the wheel is not only the drivers' strength, which is very difficult when the vehicle is loaded or stopped. The other positive point is that thanks to this extra energy source, the gear box desmultiplication will be lower and there will be a more direct relationship between the steering wheel turning angles and the ones of the wheels.
If by any damage, the assisted steering stops working, the mechanical one will still be available, although it will be a tougher and heavier steering.
Depending on the energy type used, they can be classified as:
* Hydraulic:
First to be used with the vacuum ones, at present they are the regular ones in all kind of vehicles, although they are being replaced by modern systems: electro hydraulic and electric ones.
This assistance uses hydraulic energy which is produced by a pump connected to the engine. Generally, is used by the timing belt.
There are variants, but the most common one uses its own rack acting as a hydraulic piston. In this way, when the driver turns the steering wheel a valve allows the fluid to pass from one to the other part of the piston, increasing the pressure and facilitating the axial movement to the side the driver turns the steering wheel. If the driver does not move the steering wheel in a straight line, pressures are even and the rack stays at its original position.
* Electro-hydraulic:
Electro-hydraulic steering is an evolution of the previous system. Instead of using an explosion bomb connected to the engine, it uses an electric battery sourced engine. Its main asset is that this new connection type avoids usual belt transmission mechanical problems and reduces the amount of gas used. In this case the hydraulic bomb just works when it's needed to operate the steering system.
* Electric:
The electric steering system is the most recent assisted steering and is in constant revolution. It is named after its electric engine that is used to produce the torque assistance is permanently modified by an electronic control device. The electric assisted steering control laws are used to, besides from the main assistance, return actively the steering wheel, to inertia compensation to the steering column and to a shock absorbing system comparable to a hydraulic assistance system.
Its advantage is that it is simple and efficient.
To calculate the torque the electric engine must produce, the electronic unit takes into consideration the force over the steering wheel and the vehicle's speed, being these two physical magnitudes measured by the turning torque and the velocity sensors.
To nourish the electric engine, the electronic calculator power controls produces an electric current that corresponds to the estimated torque. Likewise, steering has more assistance at lower speeds to make maneuvers easier, and steering is hard to help maintaining its path when the vehicle runs at higher speeds.
When the driver leaves the steering wheel at the end of a bend, the wheels align quicker. This active return torque depends of the wheels turning angle and the vehicle's speed. The calculator determines it according to the turning angle at an specific speed, unless they are recorded previously.
