We are glad to send you the 27th INFO MANEJO's issue. Today you will learn about the dangerous modifications to heavy vehicles and on how to cross joints safely.

We also invite you to visit our new web site where you will find previous INFO MANEJO issues, in their Spanish and English versions.

    Crossing junctions
How to cross safely?

Crossing junctions is one of the main collision causes. Here some recommendations to cross safely:

At joints, where all streets or none have a STOP sign, the vehicle that arrives first will cross first, or the driver gives way to the vehicle on his right, only when this arrives first or at the same time.

Law does not give the right to first cross a joint, it just simply indicates who should give way, however, regardless of this indication and although having the crossing priority, the driver must avoid any possible crash.

The intelligent driver is trained under prevention and understands that is best to avoid an accident than to comply with his right, and for this reason:

+ He must not overtake in bends nor pass the vehicles that have stopped to give way to other vehicles or pedestrian.

+ In two way streets, we should stop; look first to the right, then to the left and move forward if crossing safely is guaranteed.

+ Maximize precaution and diminish speed even more if the corner visibility conditions are reduced by a badly parked vehicle or other obstruction.

+ Brake before reaching corners and do not brake in the corners. Arrive at the junction knowing all the options, the right speed and gear change, and with two options: either brake, or if it is necessary stop, or accelerate, if it is possible.

+ Be aware that at joints a vehicle might be coming from the wrong way.

+ Make sure you have a strategy planed in advance.

Dangerous alterations and modifications on heavy vehicles
Nowadays, heavy vehicles, specially tractor or chassis present added axis. The causes are a lack of control, breaking the in force legal rules, that clearly prohibit all kinds of modifications without body or repair shop' authorizations.

It is clearly warned the modifications or alterations prohibitions for:

+   Chassis
+   Axis
+   Suspension systems
+   Brake systems
+   Steering systems
+   Coupling systems
+   Dimensions, among others

This kind of alterations must be performed under strict quality and safety regulations, which can be only certified for its latter approval by repair and body shops, which must be authorized by the heavy vehicles' manufacturers and by these activities regulating bodies. It is necessary to consult at the official dealer about this subject. On the other hand, apart from safety and legal issues, we must check that covering and the insurances and guarantees are not lost when performing vehicle modifications.

This kind of adaptations modify the load structures and their resistance, besides, and always in a negative way, the original braking capacity, the steering geometry, traction, weigh transference when braking, curve driving and a long list of critic aspects, which can not be simply modified.

During the accidents' theoretical analysis, where heavy vehicles (trucks) are involved, it is detected that it is increasing the lack of control due to a human fault, what is more, the lack of stability in braking or the absence of steering in emergency maneuvers, contribute to controlling the vehicle chaos. These and other situations are clearly aided by the gravity centers' variation and other matters that are related to the original vehicle designs.

When it is about trailers or semis, although they apply to what said before, they must be considered as an important part of the vehicle whole, and not separated as it normally happens. When the vehicle moves it does it all together and all the gravity forces will gravitate on both vehicles. For the tractor vehicle there will be more disadvantages as it has to administrate a considerable forces percentage that go with the trailer during braking, curves and other difficult situations.
