Driving in the fog First part
|
Media informs us daily about the large amount of "accidents occurred because of the fog". This expression gives all responsibilities to the meteorological phenomenon, which might direct us to a mistaken belief: "while there is fog, accidents are inevitable". Let's think that maybe we should just say "accidents occurred in the fog".
We do not have the ability to eliminate fog, nor would it be useful to pass a bill to penalize people that crash due to the fog. However, there are deaths and accidents still happening due to the fog in Latin America. Is there anything different to do to prevent all these accidents from occurring? Could we be able to realize of the big risk driving in the fog is?
The only way out to this problem is training and understanding driving as an intelligent activity, influenced by the emotional aspect. It's important to recognize the adverse environmental conditions that make vision difficult and which turn into a high risk when driving, in order to identify personal and the vehicle's limits, acting safely.
What is the fog?
Fog is a meteorological phenomenon that we can observe in the atmosphere like a grey shapeless mass with variable density, which generally does not touch the floor. Physics explain it as a thermodynamic process that begins when the floor dampness evaporates, causing the humid air ascent, which when it cools up later, it transforms into very low clouds, that when they gather randomly, this cause "fog banks".
Relative dampness close to 100% and an air temperature below the dew point are the climatic conditions which favor this phenomenon to appear. It is important to be aware that when we drive through routes in cold nights and we listen to the news and there is dampness close to 100%, attention, there will be almost for sure fog.
As these phenomenons diffuse rays of light, they condition visual perception, reducing the anticipating capacity which is vital to drive safe.
Driving in the fog represents one of the most dangerous conditions; in the next InfoManejo edition we will bring you some recommendations.

Safe lights
|
Thanks to the vehicles' headlamps we can drive at night or with low visibility. Lighting systems maintenance is fundamental to drive safely in different climatic conditions and prevent glares.
Maintenance tips:
+ Keep the crystals clean, they offer you a good visibility. If lights or pilot lights are dirty, lighting distance and the one from we are seen also reduces. Plus, it is necessary to control that humidity does not accumulate nor condensation occurs inside lights or pilots. Replace them if there are fractures.
+ Lights and pilots do not last for ever. If a light blows, replace both at the same time. It is recommendable replacing them every two years approximately. If they are halogen, do not touch them.
+ Use lights permanently while your vehicle is on, even in daylight. Remember that it is important to see but also to be seen.
+ Check periodically that all your lights work correctly. Also adjust the lights, if they are high, they will glare other drivers, if they are low, there will be less visibility.
+ It is compulsory to have extra lamps and the tools to change them, except if they are xenon lights.
+ To prevent glaring other drivers, replace high lights for low when we approach a vehicle from behind or when others come the opposite way.
Advances
Until the fifties, vehicle lamps were incandescent. Then, in the mid 70's manufacturers started using halogen lamps, which had a better luminous performance than the previously used. However, due to more aerodynamic designs necessities and the lamp performance there is nowadays a new lamp system called xenon. It is based on a physical principle -gas discharge- completely different to previous lighting methods. Xenon lamps consume significantly less energy than halogen lamps and their luminous performance is more then 90%. Plus, its light reduces visual fatigue. This kind of lights it began to be used in more light vehicles.
On the other hand, LED or neon pilot lights are replacing the incandescent ones due to their various benefits: less response time, more contrast between off and on and durability is longer than the car's life. Plus, LED have colored diode, so if the exterior transparency breaks, color stays.
