We are sending you the 18th INFO MANEJO's issue, where you will learn the influence of anxiety in driving and about how to realise if the shock absorbers are deteriorated.

We also invite you to visit our web site where you will find previous INFO MANEJO issues, in their Spanish and English versions.

Manejo
   Anxiety effects in driving
Anxiety is a normal reaction to stressful situations that help us to stay focused or react cautiously in scenarios that demand us to be alert. When anxiety is excessive, whether it's caused by internal or external factors, it inhibits us instead of benefiting.

Driving today in our streets implies being exposed to an endless number of situations that challenges our capacity to face stressful situations. Some drivers have bad habits, or do not comply with traffic laws, the increasing number of vehicles, plus personal problems, might cause our anxiety levels to overwhelm us. This has negative consequences, because our responses will be de-adaptive, and could result in a dramatic reduction of our productivity and interfering in our quality of life.

Anxiety affects our way of driving. It is showed through irritability in front of any scenario, groundless fears of a disgrace, panic, among others. Our body reacts by not being able to relax, palpitations, nausea and breathing difficulties.

It's important to learn to identify what the symptoms of an anxiety state are because it's possible to control it, and therefore, prepare ourselves to start the trip with no complications whatsoever. Anxiety coping techniques are easy to learn and very useful, they can be used before or during a trip. For example, relaxation techniques, proper breathing, and challenging negative thoughts, to name just a few.

    Maintained shock absorbers, safety vehicles
It is important to learn the shock absorbers functioning and some tips of their maintenance, as they are a vehicle safety element. The shock absorbers integrate the light and heavy vehicle's suspension system. They work cushioning the subsequent bounces after passing over irregular surfaces.

How they function?

They are hydraulic devices with a piston that slides inside a cylinder filled with oil. Some holes with their valves allow the fluids to circulate through both parts of the cylinder, cushioning the oscillation produced by the suspension springs or elastics.

The worn out

Time or fatigue caused by the accumulation of kilometres of work may influence in the shock absorbers' performance: the parts in friction wear out and the oil loses its quality density and viscosity. One inconvenient is that water, salt or dust might enter where the oil is and could cause leak of hydraulic fluid.

Drivers adapt their way of driving to the progressive shock absorbers wear and to the lack of stability that this implies. Generally, we are not aware of the fact that we drive with the shock absorbers in bad shape, but this increases the wear of the vehicle's different mechanic parts.

Worn out shock absorbers generate:

+ More distance to brake

+ ABS reduces its effectiveness

+ Less grip when turning, specially in wet floor

+ acquaplanning at a lower speed

+ Less tyre and other suspension elements wear

+ Comfort and sickness diminishment

+ More probable to lose control if carrying a trailer

How to realise We should be alert to different signs that might indicate a deterioration of the shock absorbers:

+ The car's front part bends when braking and the bodywork balancing

+ Lights oscillate in night driving (only in light vehicles)

+ Irregular tyre wear

+ The car oscillates more than once if we push down the vehicle

+ Shock absorbers deformed, with dents and oil leaks
