 Driving through curves
|
Turning correctly in curves brings safety, comfort and also helps to economize because the tires and the steering and suspension components wear out less. However, driving through curves is one of the most complex maneuvers when it comes to the driver estimations, due to the particular cars' characteristic that when they turn, each wheel has its own different path. When turning, it's recommended to do it with the widest radius -always considering the road limits and legislation- trying to perform the curve the most plane way possible.
When turning, there can be defined three stages in the imaginary path:
1) Attack point: the point where we start turning
2) Critical point: the closest place to the inner road edge
3) Exit point: when the steering wheel goes back to its straight position, the steering places also the wheels on a straight position.
Now it's simpler to draw up an ABC about the easy procedures that will bring efficiency and safety when turning:
a) Brake when driving straight, before the attack point, till you reach the right speed for the curve. Place the right gear.
b) Turn in low progression -accelerating- driving the vehicle, and not being driven by the impulse.
c) Accelerate in the exit point.
Important: Avoid braking when turning, especially in low adherence conditions. Bear in mind that if the brake is pressed it might occur that the inertia and centrifuge forces push the vehicle out of the lane, causing skid and even going out of the road.

How to choose the best tires
|
Choosing the right tire is not something trivial. Market offers a big number of manufacturers that present tires for all kind of vehicles. However, if the basic knowledge to choose the right tire is unknown, we might make mistakes that concern safety and economy.
Wheels are part of the car suspension, braking and steering systems and influence decisively in safety, manueverablility, general vehicle driving and fuel consumption. That's why it's recommended to purchase tires of the same size and type as the originals, because the manufacturer have selected then taking into consideration comfort, bearing resistance, speed, grip, although the original tires don't always adapt to every case, because each driver has its own different needs and requirements that must be known.
Choosing tires include taking into consideration these aspects:
+ Vehicle type
+ Our way of driving
+ Everyday road type
+ State of the road
+ Climatic conditions
Defined these, we must:
+ Chose the right tire size. This and other design information can be find in the user manual. Also you can turn to the tire manufacturers' technical specifications.
+ Learn to read the tires' markings. On the external sidewall there are some numbers and letters which inform us about the tire specifications -see InfoManejo nº11-.
+ When buying tires, bear in mind some issues such as price and quality. Sometimes we can find high quality but also very expensive ones. Remember that is better to purchase tires in authorized distributors, although you might have to pay a little bit more for them, they guarantee you the tires.
+ Consider facts such as tire load and traction, estimated km lifetime, operation temperature, guarantee, etc. Don't forget to check the guarantee policy.
