When it's better to avoid driving?
|
Drowsiness, alcohol and drugs affect our perception. The most serious consequence of driving under a no lucidity state is the modification in the neuronal processing, which distorts our perceptions of objects and distances and it modifies the responses actions. For example, we can have the illusion of being able of overtaking a vehicle or braking in a distance that is actually impossible.
Don't drive if you feel:
+ Difficulties to focus your sight or to maintain your eyes open.
+ Effort needed to maintain your head lifted up.
+ Frequent yawns.
+ Loosing concentration, incoherent thoughts or daydreaming.
+ Discomfort.
+ Forgetting about the last stretch covered.
+ Disobeying traffic signs.
Recommendations to avoid these symptoms:
+ Rest enough time before travelling.
+ Do not use alcohol drinks or substances unauthorized by your doctor.
+ Schedule regular stops in safe places (2 hs or 200 km periods suggested).
+ Keep the cabin well ventilated and at an adequate temperature.
+ Avoid listening to music, especially if it's slow or relaxing.
+ Use comfortable clothes and adopt correct postures which help visibility.
+ Ask the eventual companion to help us stay alert.

Safety chains for coupling systems
|
Besides of the own coupling system of a light vehicle with its trailer, it's necessary to use safety chains. In case the main system fails, as in any safety mechanism, it's mandatory to have an auxiliary system that avoids the trailer to get loose.
Safety chains are held to the drawbar*, go under it and are hooked on the back part of the tractor vehicle. There are two connection configurations, simple and double:
Simple connection Double connection
Advices for the two types of connections:
+ Chains should be held in a crossing way. This way, steering is not completely lost if the trailer separates, because when this moves to one of its sides, it will be supported by one of the chains. Plus, this chain configuration allows one to tense and hold, and the other to loose, keeping the steering percentage.
+ The chains must pass below the drawbar. This is how we can prevent this part from touching the ground.
+ The drawbar must have an element, such as a skate, to allow it to slide on the floor, in case there is a separation between the two vehicles.
* Drawbar: Bar located at the front part of the trailer, which has on its end a part of the coupling device (and, eventually, the overspeed brakes system actuator).

Continuous improvement: Management rules and certification
|
Nowadays, companies' social responsibility it's not just a question of image, but it also is directed related with business, such as shares values, acquired compromises, complying with the law, etc. Thus, responsible and vehicle safety related management must be certified.
To certify our work with well known and specialized organization will let us validate our work with our clients. If we have worked with procedures, carried out a good management indicating system, if we have advanced to concrete our plans objectives to improve continuously, thus certify everything done is the step to be followed.
There are no specific rules that certify vehicle management, but some activities of our work can be certified with quality management (ISO 9000 series), they are also good guidelines to rethink our management.
Also, a good practice is to certify gradually with more specific rules the different activities from the areas we select, for example using the existing safety ones: IRAM 3810 (Passenger automotive transport's good practise), the specific ones about belts, headrest, etc. or the recent ones about people certification.
Unfortunately, there isn't a set of rules including all the related to vehicle management. This would be a good support point for companies that believe that safety driving as an essential business value.
